China strives to tackle environmental issues

Damage caused by mining

The Ministry of Natural Resources said on Tuesday that China plans to stimulate investment in addressing environmental damage caused by mining, and wants public and private organizations to participate.

More than 3.6 million hectares of land in China were used and damaged as a result of mining at the end of 2018, the ministry said on its website.

According to the ministry, to date, recovery has been constrained by the lack of an effective investment promotion policy.

The ministry’s “market-oriented path” for the restoration process aims to encourage the repair and use of mine land, including the appropriate use of abandoned soil and stones left over from mining.

It also aims to encourage investment in social capital by providing land use rights to abandoned public development land after restoration is completed.

According to the ministry, plans that will last for five years will cover all entities, including private firms.
