Wind has overtaken coal and nuclear power in the US

wind is the second largest source of electricity

On March 29, U.S. wind turbines produced more electricity than coal or nuclear power plants, the U.S. Energy Information Administration said Thursday. This made wind the second largest source of electricity that day, behind only natural gas and slightly ahead of nuclear power.

Over the past 15 years, the capacity of wind farms in the US has grown rapidly, and many see them as an important weapon in the quest to decarbonize the grid and fight climate change.

However, due to natural fluctuations in wind speeds resulting in varying amounts of electricity generation, the EIA does not expect wind to outperform coal or nuclear for a whole month in 2022 or 2023.

EIA data dates back to 2018 and does not include Alaska or Hawaii
