Mining company Vale said on Tuesday it had deposited 1.2 billion reais ($252.37 million) as part of a compensation deal related to the Brumadinho dam disaster in Brazil.

The agreement, signed in February 2021, provides for 37.7 billion reais to compensate for all collective damage caused by the breach of the Brumadinho dam.

Of the total amount, Vale has already paid out 18.5 billion reais, according to the statement.

The resources will later be transferred to the state of Minas Gerais and returned to projects to improve urban mobility and strengthen public services such as paving roads and renovating hospitals.

In 2019, a dam collapse at the Vale Córrego do Feijão mining complex killed 270 people.
