Telegraph: London is ready to pay Brussels € 40 billion for Brexit

According to the newspaper, high-ranking officials in the British government came to the conclusion that the proposed amount is the only option that allows London to get out of the current impasse

The UK is ready to pay the EU up to € 40 billion with the implementation of Brexit, if Brussels agrees to discuss such issues of financial settlement as the conclusion of a trade agreement within the framework of the deal on future partnership. This was reported on Saturday by The Sunday Telegraph.

According to her, high-ranking officials in the British government came to the conclusion that the proposed amount is the only option that should allow London to get out of the current deadlock in the course of negotiations with Brussels. "As for the negotiation process, it simply does not work, we know that their position is € 60 billion, but in reality the lower limit is at the level of € 50 billion. We have closer to € 30 billion, but the acceptable amount is € 40 billion, "- the newspaper quotes the source.

A similar proposal to pay the EU such an impressive amount can sow political differences in the British government. Supporters of Brexit are unlikely to agree to this, unless in exchange for "working relations [with the EU] in the future," the publication emphasizes. British Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson earlier in July said in parliament that European leaders "will get a turn from the gate" if they expect that London will pay a "sky-high" bill for secession from the EU.

The referendum on the issue of UK membership in the EU was held on June 23 last year. The victory on it with the result of 51.9% against 48.1% was won by the supporters of Brexit. Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Therese May, officially notified Brussels on March 29 about the launch of a two-year exit procedure from the community, which should be completed by the end of March 2019.

Official talks between London and Brussels on the conditions on which the UK will withdraw from the EU began on June 19 in the Belgian capital. They should last until November 2018, after which the parties will have six months to ratify the agreements reached in national parliaments.
