Trump doubled tariff on steel imports from Turkey to 50%

Due to hostilities in the north-east of Syria, US rates for Turkish steel under section 232 were doubled from 25% to 50%.

US increases tariffs on Turkish steel

US President Donald Trump said on Monday that as a result of the country's military operations in northeastern Syria, he will double the tariffs on Turkish steel for section 232 from 25% to 50%. In a statement posted on Twitter on Monday afternoon, Trump said he would soon issue an order to increase steel tariffs and allow sanctions against Turkey. He tweeted: “I will soon issue an order authorizing sanctions against current and former Turkish government officials and any persons who contribute to the destabilizing actions of Turkey in northeastern Syria. Similarly, steel tariffs will be increased to 50 percent, the level before the decline in May. The United States will also immediately end negotiations led by the Department of Commerce,

Earlier, trump raised the tariff rate for steel in Turkey from 25% to 50% in August 2018 due to the devaluation of the Turkish lira and the intensification of political tension between the countries due to the detention of the American pastor Branson. The Turkish steel tariff rate was subsequently reduced to 25% in May 2019.

According to section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act of 1962, the president can adjust the tariff level set for any country at any time convenient for them.
