ArcelorMittal was fined $ 14,000 for the death of a steelworker at the Indiana Harbor steel mill as a result of a train accident in April of this year.

The incident occurred in the yard of blast furnace No. 7 of the plant on April 2, when the railway operator was beaten to death, when its engine hit the carriage on a nearby track. The staff member was identified as Edwin L. Fleming, 49, from Schererville.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration of the Indiana Department of Labor reported two serious safety violations at the site. He noted that ArcelorMittal failed to create and maintain safe and healthy working conditions for employees to protect them from recognized hazards. In addition, workers were exposed to shocks and injuries between them. The inspectors suggested that the company should strictly follow railway safety procedures, conduct a proper assessment of existing circuit breakers and ensure that employees are adequately trained in specific procedures.

ArcelorMittal has 15 days to pay a fine to clarify a quote.

Meanwhile, company spokesman William Stiers said that all US businesses have reliable security programs in accordance with OSHA regulations. He is working with IOSHA to resolve quotes, he added. In addition, he assured that the company intends to take all necessary measures to avoid similar fatal incidents in the future.
