Turkish metal exporters say that the recent US decision to raise import tariffs on Turkish steel will have little or no impact, as they already have alternative plans to maintain the dynamics of steel exports.
Weisel Yayan, secretary general of the Turkish Steel Association, said: “The US market has been giving us a lot of trouble for several years. We replaced lost sales there with new and other existing markets. Steel exports to the United States have declined over the years. "If customs duties were not reduced to 25% in May, we would not be able to export at all this year. We offset the decline in our exports to the United States last year by increasing sales to the EU."
Turkey's steel exports to the US totaled $ 1.1 billion in 2016, $ 1.8 billion in 2017, $ 910 million in 2018 and $ 190 million in the first eight months of 2019, which is just 6, $ 7 billion a day.
