HYBRIT Project Launched at UN Climate Change Summit

Steel project without fossil fuels - a joint initiative of LKAB, SSAB and Vattenfall

Low Carbon Steel Initiative

SSAB, LKAB, and Vattenfall, the creators of the HYBRIT initiative, will join the Industry Leadership Group, which was organized at the UN Climate Change Summit in New York by Swedish Prime Minister Stefan Löfven. HYBRIT has been presented as one of the most ambitious and most transformative climate change initiatives. The goal of the group of leaders is to accelerate the transition to low-carbon paths in hard-to-reach sectors in line with the objectives of the Paris Agreement.

UN Secretary General António Guterres invited the world to the climate action summit on September 23 to present concrete, realistic plans to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to net zero emissions by 2050. Sweden, together with India, is tasked with demonstrating the importance of industry for the transition to a sustainable and fossil society. In this regard, Sweden and India created the Leader Group for the Transition to Industry during the UN Climate Change Summit. HYBRIT owners will become part of a group of leaders and have been introduced as one of the most ambitious and most transformative climate change initiatives.

The leadership group will work to accelerate the transition of all sectors of the industry to low-carbon paths in line with the goals of the Paris Agreement, while continuing efforts to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2050. By supporting governments and industries in transforming the low-carbon industry, In addition to creating an arena for innovation and public-private partnerships, the Leadership Group will create the conditions for a successful and more effective implementation of the Paris Agreement, while recognizing the principles and provisions of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change and the Paris Agreement, including equality and CBDR-RC.

Mr Martin Lindqvist, President and CEO of SSAB, said that “the steel industry is seen as one of the“ hard to reach ”sectors, but we firmly believe that net zero emissions are possible. That is why we took the initiative to create HYBRIT. Fossil steel has tremendous potential and can help many customer segments truly get rid of fossils. We believe that the transition of the industry is favorable both for the climate and for the competitiveness of our industry. ”

Mr. Jan Mostrem, President and CEO of LKAB, said: “I think we can say that HYBRIT is one of the most ambitious industrial transition projects in the world today. All three companies have committed to the fossil by 2045, we have a specific schedule and through HYBRIT we started construction and invested to start the transition. For us, LKAB, Europe’s largest iron ore producer, Hybrit plays an important role in creating a climate-independent value chain from rock to hot steel, and we do this with support from the Swedish government and with academia. ”
