Negotiations to complete the sale of the steel producer will continue with Ataer, but the delay raises new doubts about the deal. 5,000 jobs are directly at risk in British Steel and another 20,000 in the supply chain.
British Steel's official successor said: “As long as negotiations with Ataer continue, discussions are now possible with other parties that have expressed a constant and renewed interest in acquiring the entire British Steel business. Ataer is still very interested in acquiring the business, and we continue to have detailed discussions with them to make a deal. ”
Council Executive Redcar and Cleveland Council Member Mary Lanigan said: “We welcome ongoing discussions with Ataer and others who are interested in the British Steel business. We have two successful factories in our town in Lakenby and Skinningrow, and they are a vital part of our economy, providing jobs and prosperity for many families. Our focus has been on securing the future of these plants along with other parts of British Steel. We know that a lot of work remains to be done to secure a deal that will continue to support the efforts of the Official Recipient. "
